CAT Previous Year Question Papers Section-Wise
Students do not always need to attempt an entire CAT paper. Previous-year questions can also be used section-wise while preparing for VARC, DILR and Quantitative Ability.
CAT VARC Previous Year Questions
VARC previous-year questions help students understand the level of Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability questions actually asked in CAT. They can be used to practise Reading Comprehension, Para Summary, Para Jumbles and other Verbal Ability question types appearing in the respective CAT year. The year-wise table above provides direct VARC links for every available slot.
CAT DILR Previous Year Questions
DILR previous-year questions are useful for practising actual Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning sets.
While solving these sets, students should pay attention not only to whether they can solve a set, but also to how quickly they can judge whether the set is worth attempting. Good set selection is an important part of CAT DILR preparation.
Use the DILR links in the table above to access the respective year and slot.
CAT Quant Previous Year Questions
CAT Quant previous-year questions help students understand how concepts from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and other Quant areas are tested in the actual examination.
Topic-wise PYQs can be used after completing a concept. Complete Quant sections are more useful later, when students are ready to practise under a sectional time limit.
CAT Previous Year Paper Pattern
The CAT paper structure has changed over the years. Recent papers are therefore more useful for understanding the present exam format, while older papers remain useful as additional practice material.
| CAT Year | VARC | DILR | QA | Total Questions | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 24 | 22 | 22 | 68 | 120 minutes |
| 2024 | 24 | 22 | 22 | 68 | 120 minutes |
| 2023 | 24 | 20 | 22 | 66 | 120 minutes |
| 2022 | 24 | 20 | 22 | 66 | 120 minutes |
| 2021 | 24 | 20 | 22 | 66 | 120 minutes |
| 2020 | 26 | 24 | 26 | 76 | 120 minutes |

CAT 2024 and CAT 2025 had 68 questions, compared with 66 questions in CAT 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Students should therefore avoid comparing raw scores from different CAT years without considering changes in the number of questions and overall difficulty.
Which CAT Previous Year Papers Are Most Useful for CAT 2026?
CAT 2025, 2024 and 2023 are the most recent papers and should receive greater priority for CAT 2026 preparation. That does not necessarily mean they should be solved first.
Students who are still completing the CAT syllabus can use older papers for topic-wise practice and keep some recent papers unseen. Those unseen papers can later be attempted as full-length mock tests.
| Preparation Stage | Papers to Prioritise |
|---|---|
| Topic-wise preparation | CAT 2017–2020 |
| Sectional practice | CAT 2021–2023 |
| Full-length practice | CAT 2023–2025 |
| Final-stage practice | Unseen CAT 2024 and CAT 2025 slots |
This is a preparation approach rather than an official CAT recommendation. The aim is to avoid using up all the recent papers before students are ready to attempt them under test conditions.
How to Use CAT Previous Year Papers for Preparation
Previous-year papers are most useful when students gradually move from topic-wise questions to sectional and full-length practice.
Start With Topic-Wise PYQs
Students who are still completing the syllabus can solve previous CAT questions after finishing individual topics.
For example, Arithmetic PYQs can be attempted after completing Arithmetic concepts, while DILR sets can be solved separately during regular practice.
This helps students understand how basic concepts are applied in actual CAT questions.
Move to Sectional Practice
Once most of the syllabus is complete, students can attempt full VARC, DILR or QA sections under a timer.
After every sectional test, check the number of correct and incorrect answers, questions that took too long, easy questions that were missed and topics that need revision.
Attempt Recent Papers as Full Mocks
Recent CAT papers that have not been seen before can be used as full-length practice tests.
Avoid checking answers or solutions between sections. The aim is to test question selection, speed, accuracy and decision-making under exam-like conditions.
Analyse the Paper After Attempting It
The score alone does not explain why marks were lost.
An incorrect answer may be caused by a weak concept, calculation error, misreading of the question or poor question selection. Similarly, a skipped question may turn out to have been easier than a difficult question that consumed several minutes.
Identifying these patterns is one of the main benefits of solving CAT previous-year papers.
How Many CAT Previous Year Papers Should You Solve?
There is no official minimum number of CAT previous-year papers that every aspirant must solve. CAT 2021 to CAT 2025 alone provide 15 slot-wise papers. Students can use these as a mix of sectional tests and full-length practice papers rather than trying to complete every paper in the same way. Older CAT papers from 2017 to 2020 can be used when additional practice is required. Thoroughly analysing a smaller number of papers is generally more useful than solving several papers without reviewing mistakes.
CAT Previous Year Papers vs Mock Tests
CAT PYQs and mock tests serve different purposes and are best used together.
| CAT Previous Year Papers | CAT Mock Tests |
|---|---|
| Contain questions actually asked in CAT | Contain newly created CAT-level questions |
| Show the difficulty of previous CAT exams | Provide fresh questions for regular practice |
| Useful for understanding actual question styles | Useful for repeated exam simulation |
| Limited number of unseen papers | Larger number of tests can be attempted |
CAT previous papers show what the exam has actually tested. Mock tests provide fresh material so students can continue practising without repeatedly seeing familiar CAT questions.
Benefits of Solving CAT Previous Year Question Papers
Solving CAT previous-year papers can help students understand the level of the exam, improve question selection and become more comfortable with sectional time pressure.
They are also useful for identifying weaker topics, checking accuracy and understanding how familiar concepts are framed in CAT.
The greatest value, however, comes from analysing the paper after attempting it rather than simply checking the final score.
Common Mistakes While Solving CAT Previous Year Papers
One common mistake is solving every recent CAT paper topic-wise early in the preparation cycle. When the same papers are attempted later as mocks, familiar questions can make the score look better than the student’s actual level.
Students should also avoid checking solutions immediately, spending too much time on difficult questions or comparing scores across different years without considering changes in pattern and difficulty.
Previous papers can reveal recurring concepts and styles of reasoning, but they should not be used to predict the exact questions that may appear in CAT 2026.
Are Older CAT Question Papers Still Useful?
Yes. Older CAT papers can still provide useful practice for VARC, DILR and Quant. However, the older the paper, the less accurately it represents the structure of the current CAT exam.
For CAT 2026 preparation, recent papers are more useful for full-test simulation, while papers from earlier years can be used more freely for topic-wise and sectional practice.
CAT Question Paper, Answer Key and Solution: What Is the Difference?
A CAT question paper contains the questions asked in the examination. An answer key provides the correct answers, while a detailed solution explains how the answer can be reached.
| Resource | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Question paper | Shows the questions asked in CAT |
| Answer key | Helps check correct and incorrect answers |
| Detailed solution | Explains the method or reasoning behind the answer |
Students who only want to calculate their score may use an answer key. Detailed solutions are more useful when a question was incorrect, skipped or solved through a longer method.

CAT Previous Year Question Papers FAQs
I have already seen some CAT PYQs. Can I still attempt that paper as a mock?
Yes, but the score may not accurately reflect your current performance if you remember the questions or solutions. Such papers are better used for timed practice and analysis. Keep an unseen CAT paper for a more realistic mock-test experience.
Can I calculate my CAT percentile from a previous-year paper?
A raw score obtained in a previous CAT paper cannot give an exact CAT percentile. CAT percentiles depend on candidate performance in that particular examination and the official score-normalisation process across sessions. Previous score-versus-percentile data can only be used as a reference.
Do exact questions repeat in CAT?
Candidates should not prepare with the expectation that an exact previous-year question will be repeated. Concepts and styles of reasoning can appear again, but PYQs are better used to understand how CAT tests those concepts.
Are CAT previous-year papers enough for CAT preparation?
No. Previous papers are useful for understanding actual CAT questions, but preparation should also include concept building, sectional practice and fresh mock tests.
What if CAT PYQs feel easier than coaching mock tests?
The difficulty of coaching mocks can differ from actual CAT papers. Scores may also appear higher if some PYQs have already been seen. It is better to compare performance across several unseen papers and mocks rather than judging preparation from a single test.
